System Administration
I was System Administrator for 100+ SGI and Sun machines for Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) during the time that we created the revolutionary effects for the movies Jurassic Park and Schindler's List, among others. I have been doing system administration at most of the jobs I've had for the last 20 years.
I have worked most with Debian and IRIX. I have also worked with CENTOS, Redhat, Fedora, Ubuntu, FreeBSD, Windows and Mac operating systems.
System Admin Experience
- At Industrial light and Magic
I was System Administrator for 100 Silicon Graphics and Sun machines; Designed, wrote, and implemented a powerful backup system; Designed, wrote, and implemented a system for automated daily computer status checking; Created, restructured, refined, and documented internal procedures and tools. Supported the artists creating the computer graphics for Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, and other films that involved intensive computation.
- At The Human Creativity Project I built and managed many Linux cloud based virtual machines on Amazon EC2 and on slicehost. I also working with hosted servers. I made and maintained clear wiki documentation for how to build a machine from scratch.
- At Silicon Graphics I spent a year and a half doing tech support helping system administrators solve their most difficult problems.
- At Silicon Graphics, while I was a Tech Lead and while I was a
Project Manager and Programmer, I continued to stay involved with the system administration
of SGI machines and Windows machines.
- My work at TWiki included doing machine installations and working on various system administration tasks including debugging.
- I have also done system administration work at other jobs including work at Knowledge Access, Genentech, Wang Laboratories, Atherton Technology.
